Hellenic Centre for Marine Research Legal Establishment

New marine science research centre, HCMR/ELKETHE, born from Presidential decree 164/2003 (Ed. A'131) on June 3rd 2003

The long-awaited emergence of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research finally occurred on June 3rd 2003. The new centre which integrates the National Centre for Marine Research and the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete, comprises five research institutes, three from the former NCMR and two from the former IMBC. More details of their composition and structure will be posted later. In the meantime, information can still be found and contacts made as before (NCMR and IMBC). This website will continue to give updated information as before.

There will be no changes in projects which are already up and running – a major issue since IMBC is currently responsible for 39 projects, many of these as Coordinator.

There will be an initial period of administrative readjustment though the new HCMR Director, Dr. George Chronis, speaking in Crete on June 3rd, affirmed that the merger did not envisage redundancies.

Greece, the first EU Member to grasp the nettle of the 6th FP Integration of RTD, hopes to reap the promised benefits from sharing of joint resources: the newly built research installations in Athens and Crete, the revamped Rhodes Aquarium and the steadily rising Cretaquarium, the Research Vessels AEGAIO and PHILIA with their state-of-the art equipment, the THETIS submersible and two deepwater ROVs.

HCMR had its first Directors'Council Meeting as a single institute in Athens on June 11, attended by Dr. D.Deniozos, GSRT Secretary General, who has closely followed the course of events throughout the long gestation period.
