October events at IMBC
Further Progress in IMBC new Installations October has seen the next step in the IMBC construction plans. On October 16, the construction contract between Apostolopoulos S.A. of Athens and Heraklion, whose tender was accepted for the construction of the Aquarium , was signed by the Director, Prof. Zouros. The new aquarium (2500 sq. m) will complete the range of planned installations., to give IMBC one of the most up-to-date marine science complexes in the Mediterranean.
The Aquaculture Department has made several presentations at the EAS Conference in Trieste, notably concerning new candidate species for aquaculture in the Mediterranean which has been one of their research targets in recent years. Their objective – to develop and improve rearing conditions thus supporting diversification of the production, has been achieved by the Mesocosm technology for larval rearing, a technology which can deliver mass production of high quality juveniles. During the summer of 2002 the application of the mesocosm technology resulted in the production of three new candidate species: the dusky grouper (Epinephelus guaza), the common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) and the brown meagre (Sciaena umbra).
