RV Philia Refit
The gallant little Philia has been in dry dock in one of the many shipyards in Perama, Piraeus, since the beginning of October, undergoing a major refit.
This involved the fitting of two new engines, to replace the single engine that had given such faithful service for over ten years. Ship safety will improve considerably as a result of the engine power now available. In addition, the engine replacement will increase the ship's speed, bringing it up to 13 knots. The construction of the bulbous keel, which can be seen in the photograph opposite, will enhance ship speed by a further 3/4 knot. A general refit, with upgrading of the interior arrangements, has also been carried out. The greatly-improved Philia will be launched on the 19th or the 20th of November. Immediately after the sea trials, the Philia will be in service in the Saronikos Gulf carrying out an environmental monitoring project in this area. |
