Grand Opening of IMBC Main Building
Ceremonial Launch Takes Place on Wednesday 26th September 2001 In the culmination of many years' dreams, plans and schemes, the vision dear to the hearts of IMBC scientists has at last become tangible reality. There may have been changes in the paths taken, there have been actual changes in the final location of the site - and there will be the crucial change in identity as the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research takes firm shape. But the spirit which fired the vision was evident yesterday as Minister for Development Professor Nikos Christodoulakis made his opening speech. Government investment in Greek marine science in the mid nineties had followed hard on its recognition of the pioneering research being carried out, in Athens and in Crete, by a band of able scientists hampered by lack of funding. He announced that the merging of the Athens and the Crete institutes is one step closer, with the signing of the Presidential decree by the Ministry of Finance. Professor Zouros gave a brief resume of the history of IMBC, followed by the plans for the AQUALAB facilities (soon to be ready for occupation) and the proposed new Cretaquarium, whose plans are even now coming to fruition. A reception for invited guests and event sponsors completed the formalities.
