Holistic Fisheries Management- a Mediterranean Perspective

IMBC hosts 2nd Workshop held from 27-29th March in Atlantis Hotel Heraklion

Eighteen delegates from six EU Member states gathered for a three-day Conference to consider the current systems of fisheries management applied in EU waters, in particular the Mediterranean, to identify the characteristics of improved holistic systems and to identify the scientific developments required to take such actions forward.

Prof. A. Hawkins, organizer of the workshop, was assisted by the Director of the host institute Prof. E. Zouros. Different perspectives on such problems came from three different groups of participants: fisheries biologists and managers; fisheries ecologists; fishermen representing economic and social aspects.

The overall aim was to derive a series of prioritised research requirements which will assist in the planning of national and EU research programmes, as well as to make a contribution to the debate of the needed reform of the CFP.

IMBC was also represented by nominated members of the Fisheries Department.

An IMBC roving reporter was present on the second day to record aspects of the discussion.
