HELLENIC CENTRE FOR MARINE RESEARCH
Parliamentary approval for legislation authorising the establishment of a new research centre created by the merging of IMBC and NCMR
Months of speculation have now ended as the process towards the unification of IMBC (two research institutes) and NCMR (three research institutes) under the umbrella of the new Hellenic Centre for Marine Research gets under way. The Presidential decree which will determine the structure and operation of the new centre will be released by the Ministry of Development in the very near future Dr. Chronis, acting NCMR Director, paid a 2-day visit to Heraklion to carry out a long-standing commitment to deliver a lecture on oceanography as part of the Dept. of Biology's post-graduate course. While in Heraklion, he visited the new IMBC installations at Gouves. (Current progress can be seen below). The IMBC Staff Union was able to organise a meeting with Dr. Chronis. The meeting took the form of an open forum, during which the IMBC staff had the opportunity to meet Dr. Chronis, to discuss important issues and exchange views and news about the future of the new centre. In a climate of mutual understanding and cooperation, a new era for Greek marine science, supported by commitment and investment by the Greek Government, is fast approaching.
