The IMBC, in common with the rest of the world, mourns the
recent death of Commander Cousteau. We are grateful that
some of the IMBC young scientists had the opportunity of
meeting this legendary figure in his vigorous later years,
at a stimulating CIESM Meeting held in Athens in 1988. To
their interest and delight, he put forward his views in the
academic sphere just as trenchantly as he did in his role as
the populariser of marine science. How many budding marine
scientists owed their enthusiam for the subject by his
trailblazing underwater glimpses of the wonders of the sea?
