The coast of Karteros
The coast of Karteros where the Aquarium will be
developed is 7 km from the centre
of Heraklion and the harbour/port area, and only 4 km from
its international airport. The area envisaged for the
Aquarium is adjacent to the beach and its eastern limit
fringes the Municipal beach facilities of Heraklion. It is
accessible by road, and is less than one kilometre from the
junction with the new National road which skirts the north
coast of Crete. The whole of this coastal area constitutes
one of the few remaining areas in Heraklion which has not
been encroached upon by coastal strip development. The
coastline has thus remained unspoilt, with sand dunes, a
good growth of halophytes, and a more or less unpolluted
sea.
The map shows a general plan giving the main features of
the area, along with the proposed location of the Aquarium
and the new IMBC.
