Towards 2000 This area has been made available to the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete by the Greek Tourist Organisation (E.O.T.). The plan is to construct these new installations with modern up-to-date specifications along with the development of a SeaWorld fully integrated with the main Aquarium buildings. The project will be carried out in two phases: however, it is anticipated that the Aquarium will be operational as soon as the first phase is completed. The IMBC's experienced staff, its present and future infrastructure, together with its high scientific reputation, augur well for the future development and sustainability of a high-technology Aquarium. The technical and scientific support for the aquarium will be provided by the IMBC which will thus have an opportunity to disseminate and popularise the results of its research to a wider public. It is quite likely that the development of this type of Aquarium by a young and dynamic Institute could make a significant impact in the domain of education and training (taken both in the wide and the narrow senses). Research activities could be developed and underpinned, which could play a part in putting Crete at the centre of marine science studies in the Eastern Mediterranean. Main Themes for the Aquarium By means of the combined presentation of live material and museum exhibits, supported by well-organised information ( in the form of posters, multi-media presentations, Points of Information with touch screens, videocassettes, hard copy printed materials of all kinds, diagrams, combined technological exhibits) visitors will be routed through the Aquarium. The identity of the Heraklion Aquarium will be reinforced by the emphasis given to the themes outlined below:
