Fish Diversification in the Mediterranean: current status, main constraints and potential for responsible development.

G.Marino, P.Divanach, M.Suquet.

The paper reviews some key issues involved in new species development for Mediterranean aquaculture and their inter-relationships.

Growth and feed efficiency of sea bass juveniles reared in different stocking densities and feeding levels M.Paspatis, G.Blanchard, T.Boujard and M.Kentouri

The effects of stocking density on farmed species are known for many species but for sea bass, which is widely cultured in the Mediterranean region, the knowledge is limited. Taking into account that feeding is dependent on fish density, this study was carried out to determine the combined effects of stocking density and feeding on growth performance and feed conversion of sea bass juveniles.

Effects of stocking density on coeval sibling cannibalism in reared sea bass post-larvae

A. Hatziathanasiou, P.Paspati, S.Stefanakis and M Kentouri.

The effect of stocking densities on survival, growth and behaviour of sea bass post larvae (17.1mm) was studied in triplicate under controlled conditions.

Conclusions

Post-larval stage was affected negatively by stocking density. Cannibalism was identified to be the factor inducing mortality during post-larval stage and increased dramatically during transition from live to artificial feed. Once begun, cannibalism continued even after food was given. In sea bass post larvae appear two types of cannibalism; i) attack and ingestion from the tail;; ii) attack and whole ingestion from the tail or the head.
