GAVDOS - Establishment of a European Radar Altimeter Calibration and Sea-level Monitoring Site for JASON, ENVISAT and Euro-GLOSS (E.U. Project No.: EVR1-CT-2001-40019)

From 2001 to 2004 Dr. Panos Drakopoulos and Dr. Andy Banks of IMBC will be contributing to the establishment of a European radar altimeter calibration and sea-level monitoring site on the island of Gavdos (South of Crete, Greece) for the European part of the Global Sea level observing System (GLOSS) and the Jason-1 and Envisat satellites.

The GAVDOS project is funded by DG12 of the EU and is coordinated by the Technical University of Crete (TUC) in Chania. It involves partners from Austria, Denmark, France, Greece, Switzerland and the USA (including contributions from NASA and NOAA). IMBC is a major partner and will contribute by carrying out oceanic and environmental support observations (both in-situ and during cruises onboard R/V Philia), tide gauge and altimetric data analysis. IMBC is also responsible for the regular and emergency maintenance of all oceanic and meteorological instrumentation that is being installed on Gavdos.
