The ICT unit specialises in solving problems using
graphic means, by finding the best delivery methods to suit
the needs of the specified target audience whether it be the
more traditional print and video methods or interactive
CDROM or webpages. The ICT's
information
designers, programmers and content providers , all
specialists in different areas of work, combine their
knowledge and skills, in order to produce the best possible
results in these very different modes of delivery. Their
multi-tasking capabilities have led directly to the IMBC's
successes in the competitive multi-media market.
The staff of the ICT offer their skills in the following
areas:
Print Based Materials
Using the latest publishing hardware and
software the ICT Department produces a wide range of
traditional print based products:
books,
reports,
video
covers and posters for distribution within the
scientific field and also to a wider audience. Care is taken
to produce materials clearly and effectively. Open Distance
Learning material has also been produced by the unit by
using a combination of print and video.
Conference materials of all kinds, including high-quality
poster presentations and Audio Visual displays have been
produced for high-tech exhibitions all over Europe (BusTech:
Athens; SETH: Athens, INFOSYSTEMS: Salonika,) and (MAST:
Sorrento, EURASLIC: Malta, Coastal Zone Management: Venice,
EUROGOOS: The Hague, EAS: Verona, LEONARDO: Brussels)
Video Productions
The ICT unit has made several specialised as
well as more general videotapes on underwater research,
aquaculture, fisheries and other marine science subjects for
user groups such as university departments throughout
Europe, technical colleges, secondary schools, fishermen's
cooperatives in Greece, and the private sector, as well as
to the general public by means of local and national TV.
See Video Catalogue for
details.
Multimedia/CD ROMs
The ICT unit recognises the importance of
this emerging technology as a useful and dynamic medium for
the communication of a broad spectrum of information. The
ICT unit is responsible for the design, implementation and
production of multi-media projects and has given the IMBC
the distinction of being one of the very first European
scientific institutes to produce these titles independently.
Emphasis is placed upon coming up with useful and elegant
software solutions, for the Scientific community and the
general public.
See Multimedia
Catalogue for more information.
World Wide Web Sites
The ICT designed and developed the IMBC World
Wide Web site (200.000 accesses in twelve months). The site
promotes the activities and facilities of the IMBC
nationally and internationally by providing unique services
to the marine science community, making available resources
such as abstracts, bibliographies and other types of
databases such as glossaries and directories. The services
to marine science institutes world wide have proved a real
success, with a number of services appealing to serious
scientists being available online.
Currently the ICT are working on several new projects
including Aqualex.org: a site designed for the needs of
online education and training. This incorporates to new
projects, firstly Onedin provides online Marine Science
courses, while the Company Audit provides online training in
the setting up of an Aquaculture company. Thalassa link,
another venture by the IMBC will give product and Service
information to SMEs in Greece.
