Professional Experience

1991- : Research Scientist in the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete
2002- : Lecturer in the Biology Department of the University of Patras

Conducted research for 10 years on the following: estimation of egg production and spawning biomass in small pelagic fishes, larval fish assemblage structure and variability, reproductive strategies of Mediterranean marine fishes, growth, mortality and transport of fish larvae and the effects of environmental variability on the distribution, abundance and productivity of fish populations.

Involvement in numerous research projects funded by the EU or the Greek Government dealing with the application of fisheries independent methods for the estimation of anchovy and sardine stocks in the eastern Mediterranean, the collection and analysis of fisheries and biological data for the assessment of the Greek stocks and the interactions among fisheries, aquaculture and the environment.

Current European Projects

  • DG XIV Study Project 98-039. "Evaluation of the Southern Greek sardine stocks"
  • FAIR-CT 98-3941. "Fine genetic structure of swordfish (Xifias gladius) in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Study by means of individual genetic tagging using microsatellite DNA markers"
  • DG XIV Study Project 98-041."State of the stocks of European Wreckfish (Polyprion americanus)"
