Overview

The main objective of the department is the promotion of applied and basic research for the protection of marine ecosystems, their rational management and the development of innovative products, methods and services in the rapidly expanding sector of marine environmental technology. The department also undertakes the coordination, organisation and implementation of research and developmental programmes for the quality control, monitoring and management of the marine environment.

Teams covering the following research carry out many regional, national and international projects. The teams collaborate and cooperate according to the needs of each project.

  1. marine protected zones and artificial reefs technologies
  2. coastal zone management and oil spill impact assessment
  3. ecological modelling
  4. lagoon dynamics and management policies
  5. marine invertebrate environmental and biological variations

These groups work on marine environmental research, including pollution studies on the monitoring of coastal areas for water quality control of bathing areas and the effects of fisheries and aquaculture activities on the environment. They are involved in various aspects of coastal management in the rapidly developing tourist sector in Crete.

The department has state-of-the-art facilities for research in applied marine biology, environmental chemistry, simulation of marine systems, environmental technology, microbiology and environmental services.
