The IMBC is one of Europe's newest institutions, founded in 1987 as an independent research organisation by the then Greek Ministry of Industry, Energy, Research and Technology, under the direct supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. The IMBC and the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR) will soon combine forces to re-emerge as ELKETHE, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, with five institutes under a common framework. A modern competitive organisation, IMBC has been widely recognised as one of the leading institutes in the Mediterranean. Within the span of a decade, IMBC has moved to the forefront of marine science research at the national, European and international level. It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to carry out its many research programmes in the fields of aquaculture, biotechnology, fisheries, marine ecology,management of the marine environment, marine dynamics including ecological modelling, biological oceanography, remote sensing and GIS.
