Overview The Fisheries Department carries out research into population dynamics and stock assessment of several Mediterranean fish species, with studies on the biology of demersal small and large pelagic fish also forming an important part of its work. The Department is thus able to provide information which helps towards the formulation of a rational management policy for fish resources. An essential element of the work of the IMBC is the need to accumulate long-term data on the fish stocks over a wide area. It is therefore constantly seeking to improve methods of assessing the state of fish stocks, which are subject to natural fluctuation. The data processing section which provides this, also provides essential data to the national authorities and the European Union, to further progress towards the formulation and implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy. Since a prerequisite for the proper management of Greek fisheries is the provision of good estimates of fish catches. A nationwide network has been established for the estimation of commercial fleet catches, connecting 24 fishery inspection offices with the IMBC by the data processing section. The primary role of the Fisheries Biology team is to conduct research to improve stock assessments for demersal, small and large pelagic fish, using a variety of methods and techniques. However, the groups cooperate and collaborate according to the needs of their many national and international projects. To carry out their programme of work, the Fisheries Biology Team uses the field sampling equipment on board the R.V. PHILIA
Laboratory Facilities The Fisheries Biology Laboratory is fully equipped for the needs of the Department's projects.
