A nationwide network has been established,
connecting 24 fishery inspection offices with the IMBC.
Fishery inspectors collect data monthly, providing
information on landings, fishing effort, biological
parameters of the catch and socio-economics of the fishing
fleet.
Reporting takes place by means of dial-up or Internet
networking. The main server of the network is located in the
Institute's main building in Iraklion. The system is
designed to support information feedback to any Internet
user through the World Wide Web, with a realtime connection
to the main database. The data processing system is designed
to provide standard information on the total catch, as well
as the distribution of the catch per fleet segment, and
species, etc; the catch per unit effort; the geographic
origin of the catch; the fishing effort distribution per
fleet segment; the cost per unit effort; human involvement;
other user-specified information. The system is also used to
provide data on the fishing pressure of the Greek fishing
fleet in accordance with EU regulations.
Scientific information derived from various research
projects is also gathered and entered into the database. The
amount and variety of data so far collected have allowed the
exploitation pattern of several stocks to be analysed and
certain trends in the composition of the landings to be
identified.
For the economics of the fishing fleet and, in addition,
the aquaculture units, a complementary network has been set
up in collaboration with the Agricultural Bank of Greece,
connecting 25 bank branches with the Directorate of Animal
Production and the IMBC. This network provides information
on the loans and subsidies of the fishing fleet and
aquaculture units as well as the production of the
aquaculture units.
