Areas of Research

ecology, biodiversity and mapping of the coastal ecosystem
the ecology, fishery and population dynamics of commercially important marine invertebrates
interactions and anthropogenic impacts on the ecosystem (fisheries, aquaculture and coastal developments)
technological improvement of environmental monitoring
methods and information systems to support decision making for integrated management of the coastal zone

Overview

The department carries out basic and applied research using an integrated approach to the study of ecosystems. This approach involves a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, physics, geology, biology and statistics, relating fauna to environment and vice versa, both within the seabed and the overlying waters.

Particular emphasis is placed on the use of modern methodologies and underwater technologies, using equipment such as towed video sled, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), sediment water interface camera, side scan sonar and bottom discrimination sonar.
The department participates in activities of the European Topic Centre for the marine coastal environment of the European Environment Agency and has been involved as partner or coordinator in numerous national and international projects concerning marine science and technology.

The department has several teams which operate independently to carry out specific research programmes, but which also work in collaboration with other IMBC scientists for the needs of certain multi-disiplinary research projects.

The IMBC has four benthos laboratories and two chemistry laboratories. As well as supporting the Department's research programmes, these laboratories are also used by visiting scientists and students. The laboratory used mainly by the Department is fully equipped for the following purposes:

  • Processing marine biological material (mega, macro and meiofauna)
  • Processing sedimentological material
  • Processing of fish parasites
  • Energetic studies

The Department in common with all other IMBC Departments has access to both chemistry labs for analytical methodologies (Organic Carbon, Nutrients, Chlorophyllous pigments, ATP).
