Historical view of the Greek fishfarming industry

Marine fish farming in sea cages started in Greece in 1981, coinciding with the entry of Greece into the European Union. The unique potential of Greece for the farming of warm water marine finfish had not really received much attention until then. Three companies, Leros aquaculture, Cephalonia Fisheries and Selonda Aquaculture were initially involved. The powerful European Union Agricultural Fund (FEOGA) also saw the rich potential and began an active financial support, along with the Greek Government. This support, together with the energy of all those involved in the sector, has led to the rise and rise of Greece as the dominant producer of sea bream and sea bass in the Mediterranean. The figures below show the evidence of this spectacular increase in Greek finfish production.
