Abstract:
A preliminary study was undertaken in order to create
a basis for the comparison of the environmental parameters
in lraklion Harbour. Samples were taken from the inner
part of the harbour and from one control-station outside
the harbour wall. Redox potential measurements and
sediment analysis as well as analyses for chlorophyll
a, phaeopigments and organic carbon content were performed
on sediment samples. Water samples were analysed for
nutrients, chlorophyll a, phaeopigments and organic
carbon content. Macrofaunal samples were processed
to family level, and biomass values were measured.
A strong gradient was found attributed to organic enrichment.
This gradient is reflected to the faunal composition
and to the values of all the chemical parameters measured.
