Box 2214, Iraklion, 710 03 Crete<BR> (2) Napier University, 10 Colinton Road, Edinburgh EH10 5DT, SCOTLAND.</I><B><P> Abstract:</B><P> A preliminary study was undertaken in order to create a basis for the comparison of the environmental parameters in lraklion Harbour. Samples were taken from the inner part of the harbour and from one control-station outside the harbour wall. Redox potential measurements and sediment analysis as well as analyses for chlorophyll <I>a</I>, phaeopigments and organic carbon content were performed on sediment samples. Water samples were analysed for nutrients, chlorophyll <I>a</I>, phaeopigments and organic carbon content. Macrofaunal samples were processed to family level, and biomass values were measured.<P> A strong gradient was found attributed to organic enrichment.
