Introduction
Compared with freshwater fish culture, marine aquaculture
has not been able to make use of straightforward or
extensive methods for producing larvae and juveniles.
The methods used have been of an industrial nature
with a well developed infrastructure and a qualified
work force using sophisticated technology which pushes
the management of the animal's environment to the extreme.
Three major consequences are:
(1)high cost of production
(2)biological instability leading to problems with disease
and quality of the fry which may affect their viability
or their eventual sale price
(3)inaccessibility of the technology to small producers
leading to a dependence on the market for the supply
of fry.
