An Illustrated Guide to Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Vent Fauna
Jennifer Schurmeier, Jennifer Trask and Cindy Lee Van Dover Institute of Marine Science, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks AK 99775 Lucky Strike is a recently discovered hydrothermal system located at 37ºN on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Its close proximity to the Azores, moderate depths (1700 m), and abundant invertebrate communities make it the focus of international field research. The faunal community at Lucky Strike has been described as one of five hydrothermal biogeographic provinces known to date and is dominated by a new species of mussel. Comprehensive sampling of mussel community fauna was undertaken at two Lucky Strike sites (Sintra and Eiffel Tower) in 1996, using the remotely-operated vehicle JASON. We present here an illustrated and annotated guide to this fauna. | |
