pulsing chemical feed on CIP skid | Product Applications: The new low-flow magmeter offered by Cole-Parmer batches chemicals through a CIP skid We had a chance recently to learn about one of our newest flowmeter products easily handling a once-difficult task: batch control measurement from the output of a LMI metering pump. The skid-mounted system shown in these photos is used in food plants for the "clean in place" (CIP) process. For those of you unfamiliar with this application, it involves flushing various cleaning solutions through a food processing system to sanitize the system. This particular CIP system, which was headed for the Territory of Guam, pumps caustic from a tank, while the flowmeter measures the chemical. The pulse output from the meter goes to a Cole-Parmer batch controller that shuts the system off when the desired quantity has been pumped. In the CIP process, metering is among the most critical steps - too little chemical and sanitization will be incomplete; too much and operating costs increase along with downtime and system wear. It is often difficult to accurately measure the pulsating output of diaphragm chemical metering pumps, even with the use of pulsation dampeners. This new series of magnetic flow meters uses high-frequency bipolar DC technology for outstanding measurement-signal stability. With PVDF and platinum wetted materials, the meter can be used with a broad range of chemicals. All together, this was the ideal solution for measuring a pulsing aggressive-chemical flow directly and accurately.
