Filter membranes are ideal for use with the gel dryer or semidry blotter. Use pure nitrocellulose membranes for nucleic acid and protein transfers, plaque lifts, and filter hybridization. Binding capacity is 80-100 µg/cm2. Use positively charged nylon membranes for RNA and low-molecular weight DNA transfers without high salt buffers, or whenever a low-protein bonding surface is desirable. Use for multiple DNA or RNA reprobings (not recommended for protein sampling). Nylon membranes are tear-resistant—will not crack or curl.
