Microfluidic Pumps

A microfluidic device was once only the domain of inkjet printers and similarly-styled office equipment. But flash forward to today and you will see a microfluidic device employed in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life sciences industry. A microfluidic device controls the flow of liquids and gases. This type if pump technology is a vital stopgap in many applications. Fortunately there are a few different pump technologies that are capable of reaching the microliter flow range. Most prevalent would be the syringe pump technology. Other micro pumps include peristaltic or diaphragm pumps. Starting with the syringe pumps, one will find a wide range of options. Many of these are capable of achieving single digit picoliter per minute flow rates – which is ideal for microfluidic devices. The syringe pumps also offer a more uniform flow with less pulsation in the delivered fluid. Another possible technology for micro pump applications would be the small self-priming micro diaphragm pumps that are able to dispense down to 20 microliters per stroke. Still another option is the new Cole-Parmer micro peristaltic pumps.
